Our People: Director Chris Leatt-Hayter

When Chris Leatt-Hayter attended a fundraising dinner and heard about the good work that Wheels For Hope was doing, he had to join – that was 2010, and he hasn’t looked back since.

We recently got to interview Chris as part of our ongoing series, to help our wonderful community get a glimpse into the people behind the scenes at Wheels For Hope. Here’s what he had to say about his time with the organisation – the highlights, the challenges, and what he wishes more people knew.

What are some of the changes you have seen during your time on the Board?

The biggest change has obviously been the increase in the fleet size, and the strong relationships developed by the Foundation Manager with families.

From Wheels For Hope: Since Chris became part of the Wheels For Hope Board in 2010, the fleet has grown to over 40 wheelchair-accessible vans. This has allowed us to expand our reach and help more families – all thanks to the support of the community, our donors, and our sponsors!

What do you find the most rewarding about your Wheels For Hope work?

Seeing the obvious benefit that our services provide in improving mobility for the people with disabilities that we assist.

What do you find most challenging?

Keeping a strong supporter base, and [a lack of] ongoing Government financial assistance.

What has been your ‘shining moment’ with Wheels For Hope?

The commitment by our major sponsors, particularly Mineral Resources, and the Perron Group [Stan Perron Charitable Foundation].

And, the initial feeling I got from getting involved in the organisation.

What do you wish more people knew about Wheels For Hope?

How much difference their support can make.

What do you do when you aren’t volunteering?

I am on the Board of TasPorts.

I love golf, riding, beach walking, the Dockers, travelling and good wine!

Keeping the Wheels Spinning

We believe every individual should have the right to move freely through the world, regardless of ability. Our work helps make that a reality for families in our local communities.

Wheels For Hope raises funds through events, sponsorships, and charitable giving like donations and bequests. And all for a good cause: Improving the mobility of people living with disability, by providing access to wheelchair accessible vans on a loan basis.

Your donations (and the generosity from our corporate sponsors and partners) help us continue to provide this precious gift of mobility for people with disability in Western Australia.

Consider becoming a sponsor today, or contact Wheels For Hope for more information about how you can help!
